I want to start waxing my eyebrows and upper lip but have really sensitive skin and I break out from time to time. Is it okay for me to wax even when my skin has a few pimples?
Acne or a mild case of a breakout is very common for just about 50% of the population. If you’re not on any type of prescription medication for acne, it’s probably safe to wax. My suggestion is to find a reliable salon that has high quality products, such as Satin Smooth® Ultra Sensitive Zinc Oxide, which caters to sensitive and blemish-prone skin. When you make your appointment try to stay away from makeup and any type of over the counter acne medicine for about 48 hours prior to waxing.

I’m going to my senior prom and all of my friends are getting a Brazilian waxing for our weekend getaway. Call me chicken, but I hear it hurts, what should I expect?

I’m not going to tell you that this service is painless, but there are products out there that can reduce the pain and make the service more comfortable like Satin Smooth® Res-Q(tm) Analgesic Numbing Spay. My main concern about your question is age. Are you over 18? If not, are your parents aware that you are thinking about this type of service? I would hope that any professional salon would not allow this type of service to be offered to minors. READERS: PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS TYPE OF SERVICE IS FOR ADULTS ONLY.

I’ve been told that if I wax my legs, the hair will not grow back for a month. I got my legs waxed last night and I already feel some stubble. What did I do wrong?

There’s nothing you did wrong. It’s a question of what the technician didn’t do because the result should be a clean waxing. It sounds to me that there might be hair breakage or some hair was too short to pull out. Here are a few rules that I suggest to my clients and teach to my technicians: 1. Hair must be at least 1/4 inch long (three to four weeks of hair growth) before waxing any part of the body. 2. Exfoliate your skin with a mild sugar scrub the night before getting waxed. If you have ingrown hairs or bumps on your skin use a loofa sponge to open pores and release trapped hair under the skin. 3. Prior to waxing, skin should be clean – no lotions, creams or makeup on the skin. Allow skin to breathe before your service. These tips will allow a better waxing service and lasting results.

My 14-year-old daughter has been shaving her arms for the past few months. I fear that she will cut herself one day. Is waxing better for her? Is it very painful? Where can she get it done?
It’s funny that today the newest trend is smooth, clean, hair-free arms. I just recently started waxing my arms and I can’t believe what a difference it makes when you’re wearing sleeveless shirts. You feel cleaner, softer and more confident. It’s incredible the amount of teens that are shaving their arms and doing it three or more times a week because hair grows back so quickly. Waxing is much more efficient and the results are far better than shaving. Finding a place to go to is easy, your local salon or spa can perform the service and it’s virtually painless if it’s done right. Selecting the right type of wax for your skin and hair type is key. The price can range from $15 to $30 dollars an arm and the results usually last four weeks.

I’m going away this summer and will be away from my salon for six weeks. What do you suggest I do for my waxing services? Is there a list of salons available that I can call that carry your products? I just love your wax.

I’m glad to hear that you’re thinking ahead. Most people just go away and don’t think of these things until they find themselves with unwanted hair. Then the razor comes out and before you know it you have cut yourself. Satin Smooth is carried in many salons nationwide. Visit www.satinsmooth.com, click the locator and enter your zip code. This tool will find a salon or spa in your area that carries our product and follows our techniques. Have a great vacation!

I got my lips waxed yesterday and woke up with little white pimples on the area that was waxed. What caused this breakout?
There’s really no explanation as to why this happens to the lip area but you’re not the only one. It’s simply a very sensitive area that has very deep-rooted hair follicles and when they are removed, the area becomes inflamed and breakouts occur. To avoid these breakouts, suggest that your salon use a more sensitive wax that is suited to your skin type. After the service try not to touch the area for four to six hours, allowing the pores to close and the area to remain bacteria free.
