A Wax Chat

Susanna DiSotto of Satin Smooth weighs in with her expertise.

Q During the winter, sometimes the only things I want waxed are my armpits. Can I make an appointment at a spa to do just that service, and how should I prepare for it?
A Underarm waxing is a very simple service that can be done at any salon/spa that offers body waxing. This service should take only about 15-25 minutes at most, and it does require a private room. Either wear a tank or be prepared to remove your shirt so that your technician can easily access the underarm area. The hair should be at least one-quarter inch long to achieve the best hair removal results. Your technician can use either hard or soft wax; that’s just a matter of preference. After waxing, stay out of the sun for at least 24 hours and use sunscreen when you go back in the sun. Maintenance should be anywhere from 4-6 weeks depending on the density of the hair and season of the year.
Q I’ve never waxed before, and now I’m planning a June wedding and would like to make sure I look silky smooth for my wedding—and honeymoon! How far in advance should I start a waxing regimen?
A If you’ve never waxed before and want to have smooth, silky skin before your big day, Satin Smooth recommends at least three prior waxing cycles/services to prepare your skin for optimal results and slow down the hair growth return. A typical leg, bikini, underarm or arm wax lasts 3-4 weeks. Facial waxing carries a tighter schedule, usually every 2-3 weeks depending on hair type. Between services, don’t forget to exfoliate your skin two to three times a week using a natural sugar or fruit scrub, and use a natural sponge. When you moisturize your skin, use only lotions or creams that contain no petroleum products, so that your skin will be beautifully soft and hair-free with no clogged pores!
Q Is it safe to get a Brazilian wax if I’m pregnant?
A Brazilian waxing is a safe and easy service when performed by a qualified and skilled technician. However, this service is not recommended for women who are in their third trimester of pregnancy, because the area is already very sensitive due to hormonal changes. The service can even trigger pre-labor contractions if the client is unprepared for what the service entails. These recommendations are under the Satin Smooth guidelines, but technicians have their own ways of conducting business. So if you’re pregnant and want a Brazilian, consult with your tech. She may first start with a bikini wax and work her way through to a full Brazilian.
Q I’m interested in taking an esthetics program to become a professional wax technician. It’s really important to me that I learn with the best products. How do I make sure the program I choose uses high quality wax?
A Before enrolling in an esthetician or cosmetologist program, I recommend visiting all of the schools in your area. This is an important decision, because it’s the school that will prepare you for your professional career. Once you feel comfortable with the school, you can enroll with confidence. During your studies you are likely to be exposed to many different products in waxing, skin care and hair care, and a good instructor will explain the benefits of each of the products. Experimenting with products and going to classes and workshops will allow you to find the product that works best for you.
