Plant the SEEDS
Live in the “now,” but keep one eye on your future.
One thing I’ve learned from my husband is to enjoy the present— don’t get caught up in the past or distracted by what’s next. I think about this every day as I see my daughter Ashby growing up so quickly and that makes me well aware that if I miss the moment, it might not come around again. So while I’m playing with her, cooking for the family, out on a professional assignment, exercising or just chatting with friends, I really try to enjoy what’s going on in front of me.
At the same time, I can’t stop myself from thinking about how everything
fits together to form the big picture. In that way, my present bridges my past
and my future. A perfect example is my scrapbooking hobby. When I’m working
on a scrapbook, I’m definitely on task, choosing my colors, theme and placement
and laughing at all of the funny photos we take around here! I learned
this craft from my wonderful mom, who picked
it up from generations before her, so as I’m putting
together my albums I always feel those loved
ones looking over my shoulder. That’s the past.
The future, of course, rests with Ashby and my
stepsons, Carson and Tyler. They will be able to
see our lives documented and, if they choose
when they’re older, continue with the scrapbooking
tradition.
Visual storytelling is such an important and
easy way to give children a sense of belonging,
security and confidence. In conjunction with
with Creative Memories, I developed the Hummingbird Series
of scrapbooking products. Through my Album of Hope Initiative, I encourage
all parents to create these albums of
words and pictures to delight and
inspire their children while enjoying
great gratification themselves. Kids
need only look through the family’s
scrapbooks to be reassured that they’re
loved, they matter and they belong.
My scrapbooking also led me to write
my book, Full of Love.
