Style Season

Loved this year's hair on the red carpet. Didn't you?

Working with Entertainment Tonight gives me a close-up view of all of the fabulous red carpet style, and this year I’ve been impressed with so many ladies and their looks! Of course, we all know that we would be lost without the talented pros who lend their artistry—and patience!—to help make us shine. Fans love to see the latest fashions and hair and makeup styles—and how the touch of the professional brings it all together.

At the Golden Globes, a broad array of hair styles graced the red carpet, ranging from classic Hollywood to ultra modern. Sandra Bullock wore her hair down and straight with thick, flat fringe to accent this modern look, Jennifer Lopez looked radiant in a basic ponytail and Scarlett Johansson and Lea Michele both had their hair style in curly, classy updos. Natalie Portman was glowing with a more classic, sleek upstyle.

While at the Oscars many of Hollywood’s starlets worked the red carpet in gowns with basic, safe, muted tones, it was their hair that delighted the crowds. Anne Hathaway walked the red carpet with her hair styled in a gorgeous chignon, her face framed with beautiful highlights. Mandy Moore was stunning with her hair slicked back into a jeweled updo—absolutely elegant! Natalie Portman took a different approach for this event, with her locks flowing down in soft waves swept to one side, and Gwyneth Paltrow was a fan favorite in a gold Calvin Klein gown with her blond locks neat and straight, polishing off her fabulous look.

At the Grammys, Jennifer Hudson, Jennifer Lopez and Ciara rocked it with extensions—very long and sleek! And for Jada Pinkett Smith and Kim Kardashian it was full, lush curls and waves.

Quick Change

Being an Academy Awards host means you’re in your dressing room a lot.

Many people were surprised when Anne Hathaway was announced as a host for this year’s Oscars to stay in step with the Academy’s younger, more modern approach. Maybe even more surprising were Anne’s frequent and numerous wardrobe changes! Styled by Rachel Zoe, Anne stepped out onto the stage in seven(!) different outfits. From Old Hollywood Glam in a Givenchy haute couture bustier number to a custom tuxedo by Lanvin to a modern sapphire Giorgio Armani Prive gown, Anne looked absolutely stunning. And let’s not forget the hair style changes. There were just as many, and all so fabulous—from long, flowing waves to sleek, classic updos to the smooth, straight style that makes the BaBylissPro Nano Titanium Flat Iron our very best friend!

ET ON THE QT

Dishing on the Entertainment Tonight (ET) backstage direction, Nancy’s onset hair stylist Bobby H. Grayson (see profile on page 38) says that he was asked to keep Nancy’s look relatable to an audience watching a family-friendly show. “They asked me to keep her hair soft and a little straighter than the loose waves we’d been doing for a few years,” Grayson says. “So I blow it dry and also use Rusk’s Hairsetter, which Nancy and I like a lot! The Hairsetter’s hot rollers give her hair a soft bend for a romantic look. One day we tried a high ponytail, and the ET people liked that.” Recently Grayson was walking down a hallway when ET’s executive producer stopped him to tell him how much the producers love the way Nancy looks. “That’s a great compliment,” Bobby says. “They’re all very nice people on the show.”

MUST HAVES

Bobby shares his five steps for designing Nancy’s sophisticated red carpet high bun for the SAG Awards.

  1. Apply Rusk Deepshine Oil to towel-dried hair to achieve shine and prevent heat damage from styling tools.
  2. After sectioning the hair, wrap the top front section in three Rusk CTC Hot Rollers for extra lift. As the rollers set, dry the rest of the hair using a round boar bristle brush.
  3. Once the hair is completely dry, gather it closely on the sides to create a high ponytail, use a tail comb to tease the ponytail for added volume and spray thoroughly with Rusk W8less Hair Spray.
  4. Twist the pony hair around itself until it gathers into a high bun and secure with both long and short hair pins. “Securing hair pins can be tricky,” Bobby says. “Once they’re in the hair, move them up along the edge of the bun.”
  5. Remove the hot rollers on top and lightly brush out the hair with your fingers to add a slight plume in the front.
