Live Your Passion

With the seasons coming and going the days seem to be flying by so quickly, I’m sure I am not alone in wishing that I had more time to do all of the things I want to do. While watching Oprah’s final talk show after her 25 years on the air, I wondered, “How did she find enough passion and love in what she was doing to carry on that long?” You’re lucky if you have that passion—that wonderful feeling of waking up every morning to another day of doing something you love to do.

I fell into a family business that I grew to love. It’s not that different from nurturing a child and being excited to watch the growth and change; that’s how I feel about my business. But I have a second passion that also involves cultivating and watching things grow. Some years ago I bought a farm on a small parcel of property, and in my spare time I’ve groomed and manicured it into a beautiful piece of land.

While that was rewarding, it wasn’t quite enough; I wanted to see the land used for something. At a local auction, I purchased some farm animals that otherwise would have been destroyed. This quickly became a passion of mine that my family shares. We now have cows, goats and lambs living on our farm, all grazing from the land on which they live. It is very interesting to watch the circle of life completed.

In addition, we founded ConairPet, a line of grooming tools for dogs and horses. Through this branch of our business, we associate with many wonderful rescue and animal welfare organizations. ConairPet regularly donates products and services to PAWS and local shelters. Lee Portrait

We should all take to heart Oprah’s message that we’re on earth to create, cultivate and inspire. In the beauty business, we touch people’s lives, reaching out to a wide variety of clients and their families and friends. The beauty industry is one big family—a community sharing thoughts and ideas. To pair with that, we’re devoting this issue to “man’s best friend,” which comes in many shapes and sizes. No matter what your choice of pet, our animals love us unconditionally, and we all have stories to share about our friends that love us so.
